Meningioma

Meningiomas are tumors of cells forming the lining of the brain. Meningiomas are generally slow growing tumors that are cured with surgery alone. A number of low grade tumors cannot be completely removed by surgery alone. In such cases, stereotactic radiosurgery is often utilized.

Occasionally, a meningioma has more aggressive behavior and more aggressive features when viewed under the microscope. These are called atypical meningiomas. On occasion, meningiomas will invade brain tissue, and are called by some malignant meningiomas. These cannot be removed surgically and require radiation therapy for control.

Recurrent atypical or malignant meningiomas are difficult to treat. Currently, hydroxyurea, a form of chemotherapy, is utilized for recurrent meningiomas. However, a number of clinical trials have been evaluating other agents for recurrent disease.
